Afterthoughts

The purpose of this brief holiday was to make sure we didn't work for too long a stretch without a break.  For this, it served it purpose.

When we planned it we could not have foreseen what our work environments were going to be like and because of some struggles that were happening with my job, as well as a few other things that don't warrant mentioning here, I felt a little flat.
Tiz's company with her upbeat views, the warm sunshine and just "being on hols" did have a good effect nonetheless.

We got to spend time with Tiz's mum, Lidia, and experienced how an octogenarian widow spends a little piece of winter escaping from Melbourne to a warmer climate. I don't think I want to do that at that age.

I'd forgotten what the Gold Coast was like as a holiday destination.
It has much to offer the right people. I am not one of those people.

We caught up with Fee, which was a real treat.

Melbourne could do with a, or many, "Nightquarter".

I think we might avoid it as a stop gap measure for a holiday in the future.

Now it's time to look forward to a big more lengthy adventure.

Viva BrisVegas blog, over and out!
👋

Wednesday 30th August - It's time to go south

Yet another beautiful day on the Gold Coast. We took this last opportunity to go for a quick walk in the warm sunshine before packing up.
Tiz, with a poor photographer, in Surfers Paradise proper

We got this fine steed to cart us around, at a great price by using the RACV insurance thus avoiding the Thrifty Rentals ridiculous rate which is more than the hire of the car.
So, large Commodore station wagon hire + RACV insurance < tiny Toyota Corolla hire
+ Thrifty insurance gouge.
By the by, I think that Commodores drive very well and,
from my brief experience,
are a bit hard done by, by the critics.

Panorama view of our comfortable 20th floor apartment

and our bedroom

We caught the 12:50 Boganstar flight to Babylon Avalon and then drove to Tullamarine to pick up Lidia, which took slightly less than the flight from the Gold Coast. Damn that Western Ring road is a ..... and there's no other way of putting it - a complete piece of shit.

The drive from Tullamarine to home was a wee bit better.

On getting home I proceeded with what I knew needed to be done, I resigned from RMIT.

Tuesday 29th August - Wind up day

Today was our last full day on the Gold Coast and the only thing we really wanted to do was go for a long walk north along the beach, which we did.

A view of where we were headed for our walk, from our apartment

The view looking back south just before we turned around to head back.

These two beach houses sat in between high rise developments and must be worth a fortune.
Maybe the fact that the beach gets washed away
when they have large storms might be a worry though.

One view of the 77 storey Peppers Soul building which is 244 meters tall.
There's more info on it here

The building on the far left is actually the tallest one on the Gold Coast ....

...and it's Queensland One, commonly refered to as Q1.
It has 78 residential floors and is 322 metres tall, when you include the mast,
and for more info go here

A fairly typical view as you walk down the beach

As I look down from our 20th floor balcony, to the left I see this ...

... and panning to the right I see this ...

... then you look up and you see the top of the crane, which is ~22 storeys high!

The story behind this is that they started about two years ago and have got a very expensive piece of drilling kit stuck a long way down so it has all but come to a halt.
There are about twelve workers there but not a lot of action.
The plans are for an 89 storey tower but if the past two years' progress is anything to go by it won't be finished for a very long time

This is the  ~ 160° panorama view looking due east from the balcony at 5pm

Monday 28th August - A day of extreme relaxation

Yes, extreme relaxation.
Don't laugh. Doing "sweet nada" is not easy as you think!

I took a few pointers from the guy below

Tiz suggested I take a break from my intense regime of hard core relaxation by going for a walk,
which I did despite my initial resistance.
Above is the walk we took to work up a bit hunger for lunch.

We ended up have having lunch at another Italian place, which Lidia chose.
I am thinking that as some people get older, and this is even more so if you're Italian,
you prefer a very ordinary feed of your own cuisine over a very good meal from another culture.
This is hard to swallow, excuse the poignant pun, for me especially since Lidia cooks better than almost any Italian restaurant I've been too and certainly much much better
than anything we've tried up here.
Lidia enjoyed it and that's what is important.

The rest of the day was spent doing paperwork, as life must go on despite being on holidays, and catching up on writing to people I've neglected for too long.

Risotto, by Lidia, for dinner.
Buonissimo 👌  😊  👍

Sunday 27th August - A nice day for a drive

Tiz, ever vigilant for things to do and always selfless, thought that I had only been doing stuff for her and her mum and nothing for me, which is wrong.
So in her search for something I would enjoy she found a swap meet and show 'n' shine at Jimboomba. The blurb on the web made it look like it was very well worth going to.

A round trip of 2 and a bit hours through some beautiful country

On the way there we came across this beautiful nursery full of tropical plants and ferns

When we got to the site, which was a paddock, the meet was on happening at
we saw not much more than 20-30 cars.
We decided it wasn't worth stopping and given that there was a golf course with a restaurant at the end of the road we just continued on.

The very gorgeous Tiz looking very proud of her choice of dishes

"What's wrong my lil' thug smurfs? Don't like the Moroccan wrap?"

I have had a few products from the Burleigh Brewing Company and I have enjoyed them all,
including this California Pale Ale.

BUT, I do not approve of "wine wank speak" being used to describe beers.
Dear Burleigh Brewing Company, please continue to make great ales and lagers
and please desist from writing "tosser" comments on your products' labels.

This is a totally irrelevant picture of the Hard Rock Cafe sign.
Every tourist place worth its salt must have a Hard Rock Cafe,
not matter how trashy its offering might be,
and this one is about as trashy as I've seen.

Saturday 26th August - The Kingscliff Market and Kookoo Teppanyaki experiences

You can't go to a place like the Gold Coast without doing a bit of driving around to experience the sights and the markets the locals are so proud of, so today we did.

We need to be mindful that we have Lidia with us and she has her limits as far as sitting in a car and the distances she can walk goes these days.
We had heard about the Kingscliff Market, which was on today.
A short 40ish minute drive got us there with only a few detours, solely due to my day dreaming .... mainly about how I am going to manage my time when we get home.

The market is held on a large grassed area between the beach and the esplanade and we got a carpark right next to the entrance. Thank you God of Carparking.

There were about 50 or so stalls ranging from vegetable ones selling horrifically expensive local produce spruiked as organic to magical potions that stopped just short of claiming to cure "rust".

Yes, the "organic" thing might be all well and good but some of the prices they were asking were just taking the piss.
The "curer" stall should have someone burn it to the ground for quackery and witchcraft.

Inked up lady discussing how she is looking forward to going to
Nimbin tomorrow whilst selling nice glass vases.

There's nothing like setting your look to "Leon Russell circa 1971" and selling pencil drawings of buxom naked young women to attract the wandering grannies.
Well may you laugh, but take it from me, this guy, after this pic, did "real good" at making sure the night was going to be a good one with the silver haired and crimson haired ladies on the left.

It works for some, not including me, so don't knock it.

I'm looking at this place and thinking "Where's the BIG sucker size bottle of snake oil?"
Nah, not really, but I can't publish what I was really thinking.
💣💣💣

$25/minute = $1500/hour
You'd think she could afford to buy some sandals to wear over her socks

But wait, there's more.
Not only can you have your body scanned, which may save your life,
for only $25 and in one minute
BUT
you can also get some HCG Drops for $95 with which you will lose 10kgs in 21 days.
HCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) is the hormone women make when they are pregnant .
Lord spare me and hold me back!
I hope she believes in that shite 'cos it goes a little of the way to excusing her.

Finally, dear readers, I present to you the "Shark Peeler".
Being sold as "blah blah .... safe ..... blah blah ..... quick ..... efficient ...... blah blah .....
always sharp ...... foolproof ...... blah blah blah ....... "
When one of the people looking asked if he could try it she responded
"Oh no, I'm sorry. It would contravene my insurance policy. But you can just see how well it works."
I said loud enough for all to hear
"You need to change your insurance policy 'cos you're getting ripped off!"
All the onlookers laughed. She sneered.
I am passionate about my peelers so don't try to con me 😠

We came home, had Lidia's pasta for lunch and then went for a walk along the beach.
Even when it's breezy and cooler than normal it's still very pleasant and you can walk for a very long way before having to turn back.

Tiz spotted this fine looking example of a 1970 Holden rumpety rumpeting down the Esplanade
I heard it from the 20th floor and I'd say it was sporting a big block Chev with a very large cam.
Oh, sorry for the petrol head speak for those of you not into it.

We had planned to go out for a better than average meal and chose, based on some Zomato and Google+ reviews, Kookoo Teppanyaki and Lounge Bar.
It's getting to the point where we need a new way of finding out if places are genuinely good
because mainstream sites are not reliable.

The food was good, but expensive. Everything else was less than ordinary.
The only thing Japanese about this place was the word "teppanyaki".
All the staff were Chinese.
They only had one no-name brand of sake, despite their extensive drinks list.
The place was set up to cater for bucks and hens nights, footy club end of season nights
but not fine dining.
Lesson learnt.

Plate and sauces awaiting the vegetables and meats

Our teppanyaki chef.
A nice engaging guy that put on a good show with his utensils and cooked everything very well.

He wrote "Thank you very much!!" using a salt dispenser, and upside down, to him

I leave you with a thought for the day -
~ Everything good in life is either illegal, immoral or fattening. ~

Friday 25th August - Marino rejoins the throngs of grey aliens

As quickly as the headache and sore throat came it went.
Good bloody riddance.
We decided to take
Lidia for a drive and thought Mount Tambourine would be nice.

It was a 45 minutes drive through lush forest and quite pleasant.
Mount Tambourine centre is a main street with "touristy" shops on both sides selling trinkets, handcrafts, secondhand clothing at hight than retail prices, bits of wood with stuff stuck to them that are meant to remind one of their visit there, the obligatory lolly shop and in this case a winery.
Everything that I mentioned earlier, albeit dinky and sad, can be expected with the notalbe exception of a winery.
I mean, when did anyone mention a winery when talking about the things that Queensland has and or does well?
Beer? Yes. Big tick there, and their craft brews get better and better.
Hippy stuff, e.g. crystal and kaftans and bush ganja etc.? Yes. Maleny. I rest my case.
Satanic communities? Yes. See above.
Mexicans? Yes. We're here aren't we?!
Friendly folk? Yes.
Enclaves to show how ostentatiously rich your  are? Yes. Teneriffe, Mermaid Beach, Surfers Paradise, Southport along the canals are just a few examples.

Wineries? The answer could easily be "You've been sampling too much of Nimbin's flora!"
That's a "No" if you don't get the Nimbin reference.
We didn't even bother going in.

Here are some pics of the walk we took down the main street of Mount Tambourine (or is it Tamborine?) -
Tasselldom.
What the ..... is that?

Are you following me around?

I'm sure there is a great story behind the naming of this place

Two of the three best looking people in the village that day

Formula - Buy old stuff.
Hang it out on a tree to display.
Ask more than new retail.
Wait ...... wait ..... wait .......

Everyone sells coffee. Most sell food, such as burgers.
All of it seems mediocre.

Cuckoo and grandfather clock shop

Every place has to a have a Greek guy called George running an eatery.
But a seafood place up in the hills?
Despite my reservations of his choice of location I believe he does rather well.

We bought some fudge and some salted liquorice from this lolly shop.
The fudge was sweeeeet and the liquorice just salty enough.

Yes, every community needs a "tea house".

Yeah ........ but nah

A place that sells "fairy" stuff and dreamcatchers and other stuff that collects dust dreams.

There was one place left, that was recommended by a workmate of Tiz,
We were told that the guy that owns it has probably been "getting high on his own supply" and is pretty "out there". He sounds like a soul mate of mine.
Unfortunately he wasn't in and we had a very helpful and knowledgeable young lady serve us.
We tasted quite a few of the liqueurs they make, using grape based grappa/vodka, and they were all extremely good.

As a matter of interest -
Grappa is an alcoholic beverage, a fragrant, grape-based pomace brandy of Italian origin that contains 35 to 60 percent alcohol by volume.
Vodka, by one definition, has to be distilled to 95% alcohol or greater, from any material, and “needs to be neutral spirits distilled or treated after distillation with charcoal so as to be without character, aroma, taste, or colour.”

My suggestion is to go to the town first, use the public toilets as the distillery does not have any and then go and settle into a big tasting session.

On the way home we thought we might stop off at the fish co-op and get a feed of fish 'n' chips for lunch. There happens to be a good one next to where we are shacked up - Palazzo Versace.

You select the fish you want, you take it to the counter, they cook it and you eat it.
It not cheap though.
Below is pictorial proof of how it looks inside, what there produce looks like after being cooked and me not being able to leave anything behind.

Below are some pictures I took on our walk along the beach in the afternoon.

We noticed the dredger manoeuvring for it's daily routine so I snapped a bit of a time lapse sequence

I'd been in touch with Fiona, whom I used to work with many years ago, and as she and her family had moved up here a while back we though it a good idea to catch up.

This is Fee.
Big thanks to you Fee, we had an awesome night.

Fee made a bunch of suggestions and one of them was to catch up at the Helensvale Nightquarter
Queensland may well be behind we Mexican in many ways but this place makes up for many of their backward ways.
So, we met with Fee, her most excellent husband Andrew and few of her equally excellent friends at Nightquarter and had a great night.
One regret for the day was having eaten all the fish 'n' chips, which left no room for a taste of the exquisite tasting 'Murican BBQ everyone else at my table were chowing down on.

Note to self - take more pictures when you go out, instead of stealing pics from your friends website!
